MDT of Leprosy

A chronic, curable infectious disease mainly causing skin lesions and nerve damage.

Leprosy is caused by infection with the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. It mainly affects the skin, eyes, nose and peripheral nervesSymptoms include light-coloured or red skin patches with reduced sensation, numbness and weakness in hands and feet.


Multidrug therapy (MDT), a combination of three medicines (dapsone, clofazimine and rifampicin) has been the cornerstone of leprosy treatment since the 1980s and is the principal catalyst for achieving elimination of leprosy as a public health problem.
